Uchuraccay: The Politics of Death in Peru
The events of Uchuraccay — which include the deaths of 135 peasants — allow us to approach the divides that continue to distort Peruvian society. We suggest that the quasi-sacred story constructed around the deaths of the eight martyrs serves as a microcosm of Peru, a microcosm of the power and ethnicity relations that imply that some lives, and some deaths, are worth more than others.
