Seven Capital Retablos of Chungui

It is not imagination. It is above all memory. But wounded memory. The Ayacucho anthropologist and retablo artist Edilberto Jiménez has captured, like a true chronicler, in seven retablos, the violence that the Peruvian Andes lived through in the 1980s. In them he illustrates how, on one side, Sendero Luminoso, in a cloud of gunpowder, and the repressive forces, with a hail of bullets, sowed horror and death in Chungui, a remote village in the area known as Oreja de Perro, in Ayacucho.
