Justice and Violence in Rural Areas (Seminar-Workshop)
This work documents the Workshop Seminar "Justice and Violence in Rural Areas: The Experience of the Andean Region," held from November 20 to 22, 2002, in Lima, with the participation of representatives from the five institutions forming part of the Red de Justicia de Paz y Justicia Comunitaria, as well as researchers, magistrates, justices of the peace, indigenous leaders, NGO members, and government officials from Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. The event was convened to analyze the problem of the exercise of violence in alternative conflict resolution mechanisms that exist in rural areas. In most cases, conflicts have been resolved through consensus, but it is also true that manifestations of violence have occurred, even in mechanisms recognized by the State, as has happened in isolated cases with some justices of the peace in the Andean zone of Peru.
