Peru. Disappearances, Torture and Summary Executions Following the Prison Riots of June 1986
This report is the result of Amnesty International's investigations into the disappearances, torture, and killing of political prisoners carried out by Peru's security forces during and after the riots that took place in three of Peru's high-security prisons in June 1986. On the basis of these findings, Amnesty International has concluded that, while initially the President of the Republic Alan García Pérez made public statements and helped bring to light the summary execution of at least 100 of the inmates in one of those prisons, there has since been a deliberate cover-up — on the part of both civilian and military authorities — aimed at concealing the notorious human rights violations that took place during the incidents and that may be continuing.
