The Media Controversies in the Mass Sterilization Campaign in Fujimori's Peru (1994-1998)

This thesis analyzes the controversies that developed between 1994 and 1998 in Lima's media regarding the implementation of the Reproductive Health and Family Planning Program during the second government of Alberto Fujimori. Throughout the work, it is demonstrated that media controversies played an extraordinarily important role, both in causing the cases of human rights violations against thousands of Peruvian women attributed to the program to go unnoticed by society, and in later bringing them to an end. To this end, the declarations and opinions of various sectors on the subject are studied, along with the way in which they appeared in the media — especially the written press — and their place within the broader context of Peruvian politics in the second half of the 1990s, which was characterized precisely by the notable political importance of the media.
