The Interview with "President Gonzalo"
This lengthy interview with the imprisoned terrorist leader Abimael Guzmán Reynoso, published in the Diario Marka, was called "The Interview of the Century" by his followers - a name that reflects the messianic character that led the members of Sendero Luminoso to commit the most heinous crimes in all of Peru's history. A few months later he was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. The 70,000 victims of the genocide did not share that fate. The suffering of their families remains very much alive, while Guzmán never repented or asked forgiveness for his crimes. In his view, the end justified the means.
