Victims of the Tsiriari massacre.
Victims of the Tsiriari massacre. On August 18, 1993, a group of 150 to 300 people accompanied by Asháninka native women entered eight communities in the Tsiriari valley (district of Mazamari, province of Satipo), killed 71 residents—including 16 minors—and left another 10 wounded. In some cases, sexual abuse and looting of victims' homes were recorded. Despite being known in the national media as an "Asháninka massacre," 21 of the victims were Nomatsiguenga natives; the rest were settlers living in the area. Most testimonies received by the Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación indicate that the perpetrators were members of Sendero Luminoso.
