Relatives of the disappeared in the La Cantuta case hold a pilgrimage
Relatives of the disappeared in the La Cantuta case hold a memorial procession in July 1994 in Cieneguilla, the site where the bodies were found of the nine students and one professor from the Universidad Nacional Enrique Guzmán y Valle, La Cantuta, who were disappeared on July 18, 1992, after being detained during a military operation carried out on that university campus. On July 10, 1993, their remains were found in clandestine graves in Cieneguilla, Lima. Subsequent investigations determined that the extrajudicial executions were carried out by the Grupo Colina under orders from the Servicio de Inteligencia Nacional (SIN). It is presumed that information about the grave in Cieneguilla was provided by Army intelligence agent Mariela Barreto. The investigation into the disappearance and execution of the nine students and the professor from the Universidad Nacional de Educación Enrique Guzmán y Valle was deliberately obstructed during the government of former President Alberto Fujimori through legislative and judicial mechanisms aimed at covering up those responsible and preventing them from being prosecuted and punished.
