Bodies of the 8 journalists murdered in the community of Uchuraccay.

On January 26, 1983, a group of inhabitants of Uchuraccay killed, in that Ayacucho community, the journalists Eduardo de la Piniella, Pedro Sánchez, and Félix Gavilán from El Diario de Marka; Jorge Luis Mendívil and Willy Retto from El Observador; Jorge Sedano from La República; Amador García from the magazine Oiga; and Octavio Infante from the newspaper Noticias de Ayacucho. Along with the journalists, guide Juan Argumedo García and Severino Morales Ccente, a resident of Uchuraccay, were also killed. The eight journalists and their guide had traveled to the heights of Huanta, from the city of Ayacucho, to verify the execution of seven alleged Sendero members carried out by peasants from Huaychao and Macabamba. After being killed, the journalists were buried in four shallow graves located in the outskirts of the community. On January 30 the news reached the mass media. Relatives of the victims, journalists from various outlets, and some political leaders traveled to the city of Ayacucho.
