Election of Alberto Fujimori as President of Peru
In 1990, Alberto Fujimori was elected President of Peru with the support of the left and the APRA. Following his election, Fujimori appointed several members from the leftist IU party to ministerial positions, which led to internal conflicts within the IU. These events highlighted the crisis and fragmentation within the IU, as well as the broader challenges faced by the left in contributing to a stable democratic regime.
Con el apoyo de la izquierda e IU y el APRA, Alberto Fujimori fue elegido presidente. Poco tiempo después nombró a Gloria Helfer (IU), Fernando Sánchez Albavera (IS) y Carlos Amat y León (IS) como Ministros de Educación, Energía y Minas y Agricultura respectivamente. La elección de Helfer como ministra causó nuevas discrepancias entre los partidos integrantes de IU, con el PUM afirmando que IU estaba co-gobernando. Esta elección electoral marcó el inicio de un proceso que debilitaría posteriormente a la izquierda política peruana.
