On December 20, 1986, an armed confrontation took place in Chaccocunca, district of Azángaro, department of Puno, between State forces and militants of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. The confrontation resulted in the death of 10 hikers. This event was part of the period of expanding violence in the department of Puno, where the PCP-SL had declared the provinces of Melgar, Azángaro and Huancané as 'red zones' in August 1985. The confrontation occurred in a context of intensifying internal armed conflict in the Puno region, particularly in the department's highland provinces.
