Accusations by President Alberto Fujimori Against the Opposition
On July 29, 2000, President Alberto Fujimori accused the opposition of planning to set fire to the Congress of the Republic to prevent his inauguration. He compared their plans to those of the Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA) and criticized them for inciting chaos and destruction in Lima. Fujimori claimed that the opposition failed in their objective and rejected allegations that the government and armed forces were responsible for the resulting deaths.
El 29 de julio de 2000, durante un almuerzo con altos mandos militares en Palacio de Gobierno, el presidente Alberto Fujimori acusó a la oposición de querer incendiar el Congreso de la República para impedir su juramentación y sembrar caos en Lima. Calificó a un sector de la oposición como «recalcitrante» y comparó sus planes con los del MRTA, afirmando que buscaban sabotear la instalación del nuevo gobierno. Fujimori rechazó responsabilidades del gobierno en las muertes ocurridas durante las movilizaciones, atribuyéndolas a «agitadores profesionales» convocados irresponsablemente por organizadores de las protestas.
