In July 1984, members of the Peruvian Army perpetrated a mass murder in the town of Pucayacu, Ayna district, La Mar province. This event occurred in the context of the intensification of military operations in the Apurimac River Valley during 1984, the year in which the Armed Forces and the DECAS (Counter-Subversive Civil Defense) began their offensive against the Shining Path in the area. The event is part of a series of human rights violations committed by both law enforcement and subversive groups during the most violent period in the valley.
