MRTA's Militarization and Kidnapping Campaign
In August, the MRTA held its II Central Committee meeting, where leaders confirmed a shift towards increased militarization amidst the polarized Peruvian society. By September 1987, the MRTA initiated a campaign of kidnappings in Lima, targeting prominent businessmen to finance their operations. This marked a significant escalation in their tactics, as they sought to fund their activities through ransom, resulting in the deaths of two kidnapped businessmen.
Durante el II Comité Central del MRTA en agosto, los dirigentes emerretistas concluyeron que la situación nacional exigía una respuesta armada propia frente a la militarización impulsada por Sendero Luminoso y las Fuerzas Armadas. El MRTA se planteó reestructurar el Frente Nororiental y abrir dos nuevos frentes en las regiones Oriental y Central, consolidando su organización y trabajo proselitista. Para financiar sus operaciones, optaron por el secuestro de importantes empresarios nacionales a partir de septiembre de 1987, realizados en Lima por las llamadas Fuerzas Especiales, canjeando la libertad de rehenes por sumas de dinero significativas.
