Formation of the Batallón América
In 1986, a group of MRTA militants, along with members of the Ecuadorian organization Alfaro Vive ¡Carajo! and the Colombian M-19, formed the Batallón América. This group participated in guerrilla actions against Colombian government forces. The formation was part of MRTA's strategy to gain experience and strengthen ties with other leftist organizations in Latin America.
A fines de 1985, el MRTA envió un grupo de militantes a Colombia para adquirir experiencia militar. Este contingente emerretista, junto con militantes de la organización Alfaro Vive ¡Carajo! del Ecuador y del M-19, formaron el Batallón América en 1986. El batallón participó en acciones guerrilleras contra las fuerzas del orden colombianas. Esta iniciativa se enmarcaba en los esfuerzos del MRTA por explorar zonas rurales para asentar futuras columnas guerrilleras.
