Municipal Elections
On November 13, 1983 municipal elections were held throughout Peru. In Lima, Izquierda Unida (IU) won with Alfonso Barrantes Lingán as candidate.
On November 13, 1983, municipal elections were held throughout the country. These elections took place in a context of intense political violence and terrorist attacks by the PCP-SL. In Lima, the United Left (IU) coalition was the winner. The main candidates for mayor of Lima were Amiel of the PPC, Barnechea of the PAP, Barrantes of the IU and Grados of the AP, who held debates on October 28 and 31 with great media coverage. Alfonso Barrantes Lingán of IU later assumed the mayoralty of Lima in January 1984.
