Assassination of Marcelino Pachari Roselló by PCP Sendero Luminoso
On May 19, 1989, the PCP Sendero Luminoso assassinated Marcelino Pachari Roselló, the mayor of Azángaro, while he was inspecting the reconstruction of a bridge previously destroyed by the group. This event was part of a series of violent actions by the PCP-SL in the region, which included further attacks and assassinations of local authorities. The violence prompted a military response to regain control and counter the subversive activities.
El viernes 19 de mayo de 1989, un grupo del PCP-SL asesinó a Marcelino Pachari Roselló, alcalde provincial de Azángaro, quien se encontraba inspeccionando la reconstrucción del puente que días atrás había sido volado por un destacamento del PCP Sendero Luminoso. Este atentado fue parte de una seguidilla de acciones violentas realizadas por el PCP-SL en mayo de 1989 en la región de Puno. Entre enero y julio de 1989, el PCP-SL causó 23 bajas en las fuerzas policiales y 14 autoridades fueron ajusticiadas.
