Impact of Sendero Luminoso on Agricultural Activities in Peru
The agricultural activities in the regions of Junín and Ayacucho in Peru were severely affected due to the presence of the terrorist group Sendero Luminoso. According to the III National Agricultural Census of 1994, approximately 30,655 hectares of agricultural land were left uncultivated due to terrorist actions. The most affected areas were Junín and Ayacucho, with significant reductions in cultivated land, impacting the livelihoods of local farming communities.
La actividad agropecuaria, principal sustento de las comunidades afectadas, sufrió un colapso significativo durante el periodo de violencia. Las familias campesinas redujeron drásticamente su superficie sembrada, de aproximadamente 4 yugadas a menos de 2 yugadas, y muchas cultivaban sus chacras en el menor tiempo posible por la presencia de Sendero Luminoso. Según el III Censo Nacional Agropecuario de 1994, la superficie agrícola no cultivada debido a la acción terrorista alcanzó 30,655 hectáreas, afectando particularmente a 10,575 unidades agrícolas en Junín y Ayacucho, donde se dejaron de cultivar aproximadamente 13,000 y 9,000 hectáreas respectivamente.
