Assassination of Indigenous Leaders in Anapati
On July 22, 1990, in the native community of Anapati along the Tambo River, the Shining Path (PCP-SL) assassinated three prominent indigenous leaders of the Central Jungle: Pablo Santoma Santos, Oscar Chimanga Chanquete, and Dante Martínez López. This event occurred following the annual assembly of the Asháninka federation of the Río Tambo, where the federation had decided to reject the PCP-SL. In response to the assassinations, the Asháninka people of the Lower Tambo, particularly from the community of Poyeni, organized an Asháninka Army to fight against the Shining Path.
El 22 de julio de 1990 en la comunidad nativa Anapati, en el río Tambo, el PCP-SL asesinó a tres importantes dirigentes indígenas de la Selva Central: Pablo Santoma Santos (presidente de la CART), Oscar Chimanga Chanquete (presidente del CONOAP) y Dante Martínez López (secretario de defensa del CONOAP). Este crimen ocurrió al finalizar la asamblea anual de la federación asháninka, donde la CART había decidido rechazar al PCP-SL. Como respuesta, los Asháninka del Bajo Tambo, especialmente los de la comunidad de Poyeni, se levantaron en armas y organizaron un Ejército Asháninka para luchar contra Sendero Luminoso, continuando una tradición de defensa que caracteriza la historia de este pueblo.
