Cultural Activity and Subsequent Surveillance at UNE
In January 1991, a local television station aired a video showing a cultural-political event at the Universidad Nacional de Educación (UNE) in Peru, where participants, including students and Shining Path leaders, displayed flags and sang hymns to Abimael Guzmán. This event led to increased surveillance of students by intelligence agents, which eventually resulted in the targeting and assassination of several students and a professor by the Colina Group in 1992. The situation highlighted the tense atmosphere and the influence of Sendero Luminoso within educational institutions.
El 26 de enero de 1991, una estación televisiva local proyectó un video que mostraba un acto político cultural en la Universidad Nacional de Educación (UNE) donde mandos senderistas, universitarios y estudiantes desfilaban con banderas del PCP-SL y cantaban himnos a Abimael Guzmán. La difusión de este material generó la percepción de que la UNE se había convertido en una zona liberada. A partir de entonces, el SIN (Servicio de Inteligencia Nacional) comenzó a destacar agentes de inteligencia infiltrados en el campus que informaban semanalmente sobre actividades estudiantiles y orientaciones políticas. Esta vigilancia resultaría en el asesinato de nueve estudiantes y un profesor por el Grupo Colina en julio de 1992.
