On July 16, 1992, a car bomb exploded on Tarata Street in the Miraflores district of Lima. This attack occurred in a context of intensifying violence in the capital, where the subversive groups Sendero Luminoso and MRTA increased their actions by carrying out continuous attacks against public and private entities. The Tarata attack was one of the most significant acts of violence that occurred in Lima during 1992, a year in which new anti-terrorist legislation had been enacted after the self-coup of April 5.
