Second round of voting and election of Alberto Fujimori
Alberto Fujimori elected president with leftist support in runoff election
In the second electoral round, the left (IU and IS) asked its militancy to vote in favor of the candidate Alberto Fujimori. With the support of the left and the APRA, Alberto Fujimori was elected president. Shortly after, Fujimori appointed Gloria Helfer (IU), Fernando Sanchez Albavera (IS) and Carlos Amat y Leon (IS) as Ministers of Education, Energy and Mines and Agriculture respectively. The election of Helfer as minister caused new discrepancies among the IU's member parties.
