Referendum for approval of the new Constitution
The pro-government Constitutional bill was ratified in the referendum of October 31, 1993 with a very narrow margin - 52% against 48% who voted NO. The bill included immediate presidential reelection and the extension of the death penalty to cases of treason or terrorism.
