From Huamanga, the Death of Mamá Angélica and the Commemoration of the Delivery of the Final Report

On August 28, 2017, Huamanga awakens to a brilliant Andean sun illuminating the tile rooftops surrounding the Plaza de Armas of the city. The atmosphere is as calm as any other Monday morning; little by little the plaza fills with passersby who walk through and occupy it, bringing life to one of the most important public spaces in Huamanga. However, for many, this morning is particularly special: today marks fourteen years since the delivery of the final report of the Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación (CVR); a report that, in its nine volumes, recounts how Peruvians were capable of exercising, permitting, accepting, supporting, and remaining silent about the most extreme violence experienced in our country, which led to more than 69,000 people dying, while tens of thousands saw their rights violated in a systematic and widespread manner.
