Mama Angélica Dies, Exemplary Champion of the Disappeared
On the afternoon of August 28, Angélica Mendoza died, better known as "mamá Angélica," a woman who fought for more than 30 years over the disappearance of her son Arquímides Ascarza Mendoza, who was kidnapped by soldiers in 1983. Mamá Angélica, a native of Ayacucho, founded the Asociación Nacional de Familiares de Secuestrados, Detenidos y Desaparecidos (ANFASEP) two months after her son's disappearance, along with other mothers in the same situation.
