The Massacre of the Tsiriari Valley and the Nomatsiguenga Community of Tahuantinsuyo (Satipo)
On August 18 and 19, 1993, a column of men armed with sticks, axes, machetes, and some rifles attacked eight communities located in the Tsiriari valley (district of Mazamari, province of Satipo, Junín), killing a total of 72 people, including men, women, elderly, and children. This massacre, whose perpetrators are believed to be Shining Path members, was one of the most ferocious recorded during the Peruvian internal armed conflict and is commemorated in the communities of Tahuantinsuyo and Sol de Oro every August 18.
