Torn Wombs

Between 1996 and 2000, during Alberto Fujimori's government, according to reports from the Defensoría del Pueblo, more than 276,272 women and 22,004 men were forcibly sterilized. The victims were from Quechua, Aymara, Shipibo, Asháninka, peasant, rural, and marginalized urban communities who went through the so-called Programa de Salud Reproductiva y Planificación Familiar (Reproductive Health and Family Planning Program).
