It is not known how many human beings were taken to Los Cabitos, tortured and killed without any judicial process and whose bodies were burned in the furnace that still exists at La Hoyada next to the barracks. Forensic experts have identified the bones of 109 people, but this is not an exact number — it is feared there may be more. In the final report presented in 2003, the CVR recommended investigating and prosecuting the kidnapping and murder of 135 people at Los Cabitos, between 1983 and 1985, one of the bloodiest periods of the confrontation between the army and Sendero Luminoso.
