Visual Memory in Peru: Photographs from the Uchuraccay Case
On January 26, 1983, eight journalists, a guide, and a community member were murdered in the town of Uchuraccay, located in the highlands of Peru, while investigating the killings carried out by the Partido Comunista del Perú Sendero Luminoso. One of the photojournalists murdered at the scene, Willy Retto, managed to capture the final images of those events before dying. Those photographs were found many months after the massacre and subsequently acquired different meanings as they passed through the judicial system, researchers, and family members, giving rise to various versions of the killings.
