Shining Path and the Eradication of Polio in Peru
The presence of SL represented an obstacle to the eradication of polio by diverting state resources and undermining the authority of local officials who might have supported vaccination efforts. However, according to various testimonies, there was no uniform response from SL to efforts to eradicate polio, which also calls into question the supposed cohesion commonly believed to have existed within the group. Rather, it operated in a disjointed manner, at least in some respects not directly involving Senderista ideology.
