Ashaninka Self-Defense, Indigenous Organizations, and Indigenous Autonomy
The native population, primarily the Ashaninka people of the central jungle, has been directly affected by the political violence unleashed in Peru. The Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA) and Shining Path (SL) have tried to take political control of the Ashaninka population, whose reaction has not been the same everywhere. In the Ene Valley, Shining Path has managed to control the communities. In the Pichis River Valley, the Ashaninka have defended themselves and managed to expel the MRTA from the valley. In Alto Perené and Satipo there is currently a confrontation of forces: the Ashaninka have managed to push Sendero back from the lower parts of these valleys, but it maintains hegemony in the upper areas.
