The Pardon and Ethics
During the Fujimontesinista decade, a pernicious style emerged and took hold — one that few of us denounced and that the majority refused to see or confront. Society accepted it and was permissive, and as part of this, some media outlets sold their editorial lines and their consciences. The return of Alberto Fujimori was a good moral lesson for the nation. Struck down by extradition, even before the trial, it signified an ethical triumph through the image of the fallen idol. That healthy image could be compromised by the granting of a presidential pardon.
