Forced Sterilizations in Peru: Women Await Justice
The complaints about forced sterilizations made by various women and organizations in recent years in Peru take on special significance in the efforts of a group of twelve Quechua-speaking peasant women from Anta. This case is emblematic, highlighting the courage of these women in the face of the rights violations of which they were victims — not only they, but thousands of poor, indigenous, and peasant Peruvian women. As is recalled, these forced sterilizations were carried out during 1996–2000, under the government of Alberto Fujimori.
