Forced Sterilizations: Justice Waits
The recent announcement by the Attorney General, Dr. José Peláez Bardales, that the cases of forced sterilizations that occurred during the government of Alberto Fujimori will be reopened, has provoked positive reactions from the victims, who have been awaiting justice for fifteen years. The argument used to reopen the case is that of "crimes against humanity," since the poor reasoning behind the archiving decisions of previous prosecutors referred to common offenses that had already expired. The case, comprising more than 2,073 names and testimonies of victims, had been for nearly seven years in the Provincial Prosecutor's Office for Crimes against Human Rights, which decided to archive it, and in December of that same year the Superior Prosecutor's Office for Human Rights confirmed that decision.
