April 5 and 7, Two Dates to Remember
April 6 is an interesting day on which to write a column, as it is preceded and followed by two dates representing opposing and mutually exclusive tendencies in Peruvian history: April 5, the day on which in 1992 Alberto Fujimori declared the self-coup against Peru's democratic institutions with the support of the Armed Forces and an important sector of the business community; and April 7, the day on which, two years ago, the Special Criminal Chamber sentenced Fujimori to 25 years in prison for being the indirect perpetrator of several crimes against humanity, including Barrios Altos and La Cantuta.
