MAOISM IN THE ANDES: THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF PERU - SHINING PATH AND THE REFUSAL OF HISTORY

This article examines the history and ideology of the Partido Comunista del Perú – Sendero Luminoso. The rebels claim to embody a distinctly Peruvian Marxism. However, a careful analysis of the party reveals a conspicuous indifference toward Peruvian culture and traditions. The distinctions of the largest and most diverse of the Andean nations disappear into the orthodoxy of a universal Marxism, placing Sendero Luminoso, on this issue, within the long-standing imperial insertion of Latin American history into the preconceived categories and linear narrative of Western philosophy and science.
