The War Erased Even the Names of the Dead
The identity of individuals was also a target of Peru's armed conflict. In the place where the conflict erupted, what remains today are memories, mass graves with unidentified bones, or a photograph of those killed or disappeared by the Maoists, the army, or the paramilitaries between 1980 and 2000. Those traces are not sufficient to certify someone's birth, prove their violent death, or establish the right of their relatives to the reparation provided by law. It is as if the victims had never existed.
