Beelzebub or the Banality of Evil?

We believe that the pertinence and necessity of a Truth Commission is truly recognized by all sectors of civil society, political parties, and the armed forces. The latter seem to have given signs of this at least by discussing the pertinence of an "Army Honor Court." We have not heard much, on the other hand, from political parties, except to demand a reduction in the period the investigation should cover (the last 10 or 15 years), or an exaggerated extension to the last 30 or 40 years, without realizing that this would dilute its effectiveness. But Peru owes it to the persecuted, the tortured, and above all, to the dead and disappeared left by these last two decades. Let us stop deceiving ourselves by pretending it was merely "political violence" — all violence is essentially apolitical and mute.
