The Growing Cost

With the kidnapping of the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima, for the first time Peru was at the center of international press attention for a period of four months. Peruvians could see up close how the international circus of the major television networks works, the invasion of hundreds or thousands of journalists from the most remote corners of the planet, as well as the power and the political and informational distortions that this entails. Not even the capture of Abimael Guzmán attracted as much attention as the assault on the residence. Interest arises as quickly with the news as it disappears when the story ends. What has changed with the crisis? What could be learned about the protagonists and the impact they had on the country's history?
