Democratic Governance, Violence and Inequality in Latin America
After contrasting the theses on collective action and social movements defended by various theoretical schools, the author adopts the perspective of rational action and draws on the cases of Sendero Luminoso and the EZLN to study the conditions and factors involved in the emergence of collective violence in situations of inequality and injustice. The analysis argues that the threat to governability posed by insurrectional action is relatively exceptional in the case of Latin America.
