The entrenchment of the Shining Path message is not something that can be explained by ideology alone. The question is "to know when and why human beings kill and torture other human beings, who are presented as a threatening source of 'contamination' because they hold different religious, political, and economic ideas." And this cannot be understood if we overlook the specific sociocultural conditions in which the fundamentalist message takes root.
