Peru: A Crisis with Wide Repercussions

The takeover of the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Peru by a group of guerrillas from the Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA) struck at one of the main achievements that President Alberto Fujimori had wielded to consolidate Peru as a reliable country, both for investors and for foreign politicians. The guerrillas' action disproved the claim that the country had truly achieved peace and order following the capture of Abimael Guzmán. In this work we will attempt to approach these questions, and fundamentally what the hostage crisis was and its possible ramifications.
