Before the 1990s, in the native communities of Satipo, in the Junín region, the Asháninkas used to parade with their young children in their arms during traditional festivals. Today the reality is bleak, as 30 percent of the population was subjected to forced sterilizations during the now-defunct Fujimorist regime.
