THE SAD STORY OF A SHINING PATH CHILD
Alcides V.C. (age 8) is one of two children who on January 26 were freed from the clutches of Sendero Luminoso in the Valle de los Ríos Apurímac y Ene (VRAE), commanded by Víctor Palomino, known as "comrade José." That day, when a patrol from Counterinsurgency Battalion No. 42 of the Army detained suspected narco-terrorist Sergio Velásquez Santos (21) in the town of Canayre, Ayacucho, they rescued the boy and also the minor Flor U.S., age 6, who had been kidnapped by the suspect just hours earlier.
