Youth violence, urban patrols, and the hope of Madre Covadonga in the turbulent post-war Ayacucho. Nineteen years ago, on May 17, 1980, in the Ayacuchan town of Chuschi, Sendero Luminoso launched its lethal campaign by burning ballot boxes and killing innocent people. The internal war that was unleashed bled the country dry, especially Ayacucho, causing a desperate migration of peasants to the besieged city of Huamanga. Today, SL's destructive fury has been cornered, but new tensions mean the pursuit of peace must continue.
