Zero Hour

Tuesday the 22nd, 3:23 p.m. Three powerful detonations rock the Japanese ambassador's residence. Operation Chavín de Huántar had begun. Both Fujimori and Montesinos had been meeting with military commanders for some time. Shortly after the takeover of the residence, one of the commanders indicated that the MRTA members needed to be dealt a hard blow using their own tactics. "Let's go in through tunnels, the same way they managed to escape from the Canto Grande prison." That is why they would later call this operation "Chavín de Huántar," in homage to the ducts and tunnels found at that archaeological monument.
