Welcome Home. Ayacuchan Displaced Persons Return to Their Land, But Shining Path Also Awaits Them
It was 11:30 at night on August 29, and Ramón Guillén, owner of a pharmacy in San Miguel, was asleep while just a few meters from the Plaza de Armas the sounds of a boisterous party thundered through the air. Suddenly, violent banging on the pharmacy door pulled him out of bed. Outside, some men were shouting: "Open the door or we'll dynamite it!" When the frightened Guillén opened up, three Shining Path members entered and two more stayed at the door. Half a block away, two others acted as lookouts. Those who entered had their faces uncovered, identified themselves as SL members, and demanded antibiotics and money from Guillén. Published September 26, 1996.
