Images of Political Violence and Libraries in Peru
Presents graphic material forming part of the research archive that underpins the book "Censura: violencia política y bibliotecas en el Perú." The images relate to the period of political violence in Peru during the 1980s and 1990s in its relationship to books and libraries. A summary of a wide-ranging investigation into the use of rape and violence against women as a weapon of war in the Peruvian conflict. Drawing on extensive testimonies, the author argues that this was a massive, silent, and unreported phenomenon, consisting primarily of acts carried out by members of the Peruvian army. According to the data obtained, the frequency and severity of these acts was greater even than that of the wars in the Balkans or Rwanda. The work analyzes the psychosocial implications and offers recommendations for action in other contexts.
