Alan García Testified in a Trial for the Murder of Imprisoned Senderistas
The ghosts of the past haunt Alan García. The Peruvian president had to appear before judge María León yesterday to be questioned in the judicial case being pursued against a group of former Navy members for the massacre of more than 120 prisoners — the exact number is unknown — which occurred in 1986 during his first presidential term (1985-90). García was questioned as a witness, but the attorney for the victims' families, Carlos Rivera, has requested that the president be included in the criminal proceedings as a defendant, on the grounds that García not only gave the order for the military operation that ended in the massacre of the prisoners accused of belonging to the subversive group Sendero Luminoso, but also followed its development step by step until the tragic end and then covered up the crime.
