Putis: Neither Forgetting nor Forgiveness...!
Putis remains a poor peasant community in the highlands of Ayacucho, where on December 13, 1984, more than one hundred people (close to 400 according to some accounts), mostly children and women, were exterminated by members of the army in the midst of the conflict against Sendero Luminoso. The peasants were deceived. They were told to dig an excavation for a fish farm and were then killed and buried in the same hole they had dug, according to the investigation. The Ayacucho prosecutor Javier Gonzales lamented the lack of cooperation from the Ministerio de Defensa in identifying the soldiers responsible for the massacre. Published August 27, 2009.
